'Perhaps Dyana's race led to drop in Chinese votes'

TELUK INTAN The drop in Chinese votes for DAP could have been due to the candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud being a Malay, said party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

"Perhaps, but I think in time they will come to accept this idea," he said, adding that he believes that it was a 10 percent drop.

Speaking after the results were announced, Lim said DAP also witnessed a drop in support from all races in the Teluk Intan by-election.

He added this could be due to Dyana being "young", "female" and a "Malay".

"Sometimes, they (voters) are not used to it.

"Even Malays are not very used to young female candidates," he said.

Other factors for the defeat, Lim said, could be the low turnout of outstation voters compared to 2013 as well as the alleged threats by thugs and the fact that Dyana is a newcomer in politics.

In the tightly fought contest for the parliament seat, Dyana, 27, lost to BN candidate Mah Siew Keong, 53, by a wafer thin 238-vote majority.

Asked if party infighting contributed to the marginal loss, Lim blamed the media for creating such an impression.

He claimed that all levels of the party campaigned as a team.

He said only hard work and performance would help DAP penetrate the Malay heartland.

Asked if DAP would challenge the result, he said the party’s lawyers would look into the possibility of challenging it in court.

"We recognise the result was in favour of BN.

"But that doesn't mean we can't challenge it, we need time to assess the matter," he added
